Safety first and quick checks
- If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not use switches, lighters or phones inside.
- Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are working. Headaches, nausea or dizziness with the heat on can indicate CO. Get everyone outside and call 911.
- Check that the thermostat is on Heat, set above room temperature, and has working batteries.
- Check the breaker and the switch at the heating system.
- Replace a dirty filter.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
Possible causes include a thermostat fan setting on On instead of Auto, a dirty filter, ignition or flame sensor problems, or a safety switch shutting the burner off.
How often should I change my furnace filter?
Many filters need changing every one to three months, depending on the filter type, pets, and how much the system runs. Check the manufacturer's recommendation.
